Get set up -- Call each company to set up your utilities. You will be asked for your name, address, telephone number and social security number.
Make payments -- Utility companies can be flexible about how you pay. You can ask for automatic billing, which debits the money from your account every month, or send a check online or by mail, or pay in person at a neighborhood center. Check the company’s website or ask the customer service rep about ways you can pay.
Get discounts -- Most utility companies, especially gas and electric, have discount programs for people or families who need assistance. These programs are meant to help you get through the dangers of very cold winters or very hot summers. Ask your customer service rep about discounts.
What to do if you can’t pay your bill -- Call the billing department and ask for a payment arrangement. Local utility companies are usually willing to work with you, especially if you notify them ahead of time. If you don’t pay, your service will eventually be cut off, not to mention your credit score will be damaged. If your service is cut off, call the billing department immediately to see what special arrangement they can give you.
You may also qualify for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program helps low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities pay for heating and cooling bills.
